Top 10 reasons to embrace the benefits of practicing yoga

top 10 benefits of yoga

Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. You know what that means? Being stuck at home (what’s new?). The months of brisk runs in the morning are few and far between. So, what else is there to do to jumpstart your day?

Yoga.

Yoga is the perfect solution. Enabling you to focus on yourself and the present, yoga helps ground you in the moment, and gives you time to regroup. The best part? All you need is a mat or towel.

Why should you practice yoga? There are a multitude of different types of exercises that you can do at home to help you with your physical health. But not all of them help your mental health.

  1. Yoga increases your strength, flexibility, balance and endurance.

  2. It helps to increase your mindfulness being more aware of yourself. This extends into other aspects in your life like helping to develop healthy eating habits.

  3. Improve your breathing and lung function through deep breathing exercises. Yoga helps to ground you in your breathing which you can utilize outside of your yoga practice. When you begin to feel yourself getting stressed in the minutia of your day, you can bring yourself back to your practice to help center you.

  4. Get better sleep! Did you know that yoga has positive effects on your melatonin levels. That’s right! If you do yoga, you can rest easier.

  5. Practicing yoga reduces many types of chronic pain including arthritis.

  6. Several studies have found yoga decreases depression by influencing the production of stress hormones.

  7. It can help decrease your risk of heart disease.

  8. Yoga reduces inflammatory markers in the body.

  9. Alleviates the anxiety and stress of everyday life.

  10. Yoga eases stress and the stress hormone cortisol.

So what are you waiting for? Make yoga a part of your daily routine. Even just 30 minutes out of your day can help you begin to feel the benefits of yoga. Grab a mat. Get into child’s pose. Start breathing.
